Welcome to the Easy General Knowledge Quiz page. Here you can test your knowledge about a wide variety of subjects in one large quiz.
What is knowledge?
Dictionaries and philosophers declare that knowledge is expertise, information, and facts that we obtain through first-person observation, education and by comprehending a certain subject. Some philosophers think that knowledge is a justified true belief. We have to believe in what we know. However, we also have to confirm and justify that what we believe is actually true. In addition to that, the word “to know” is so widely used that it has become one of the top 10 most common words in the English language.
What is General Knowledge?
General knowledge is the knowledge about a very wide range of subjects. From art to literature, to movies, to the arts, to science, to social studies, to pop culture, etc. So you can even call a person who possesses a perfect understanding of various subjects in many areas a true walking encyclopedia. Because an encyclopedia is a whole repository of general knowledge.
Researchers have found that if a person gets a high score on general knowledge quiz games then that person usually gets a high score on IQ tests. So good general knowledge is definitely a building block of high IQ. It’s also a building block of long-term memory and good verbal ability.
General knowledge helps us in any academic achievements. Books, audiobooks, websites, magazines, documentaries, courses, educational videos are all sources of knowledge.
The best ways to improve your general knowledge are to communicate with people who are smarter than you, have conversations with them, visit libraries, read books, listen to audiobooks, visit educational and trivia websites. Our website has a section for articles that includes some interesting facts about different areas of life. This can also help you improve your knowledge.
Most game shows and quiz games use general knowledge questions. For example, the most famous general knowledge TV shows are Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Wheel Of Fortune and Jeopardy!
Long story short, you would better remember facts in general, become a better speaker, learn foreign languages easier if you train your general knowledge and exercise your brain. Especially by playing quiz games, taking quizzes and improving your scores for these quizzes.
Some of the Subjects of General Knowledge
Science:
Science studies the world around us, and the Universe beyond our world, its natural laws, the structure of matter, elements and living organisms, as well as their behavior.
Physics
Physics studies how matter behaves and the structure of matter, and also energy along with force. It is the ultimate basic discipline that is looking for the answer to the proverbial question of life, the Universe, and everything. It’s one of the oldest fields of human study.
There are many branches of physics. For example, Classical Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Quantum Physics, Optics, Modern Physics, Nuclear Physics, Astrophysics, etc. Physics studies such things as gravity, radioactivity, subatomic particles, antimatter, quantum theory. One of the most famous theories of physics is the General Theory of Relativity by Albert Einstein. It’s a basic theory of space, time, and gravitation.
Chemistry
Chemistry studies matter and its properties, and the combinations and reactions of various substances. It studies elements, atoms, molecules, ions, compounds. The study of medications called pharmacology is also based on chemistry. For ease of visual learning the periodic table of chemical elements arranges the elements by their properties and atomic number.
There are five main branches of chemistry: organic chemistry (the chemistry of living organisms), inorganic chemistry (the study of all other chemistry that doesn’t involve living organisms), biochemistry (the chemical processes inside living organisms, including organic molecules), analytical chemistry (methods and tools of study of chemical compounds), physical chemistry (physical structure of matter and chemical compounds, atoms, particles, etc).
Astronomy
Astronomy studies celestial objects, our Universe, outer space and its phenomena, and the evolution of all the objects in space. The science of astronomy examines such extraterrestrial objects as stars, planets, moons, asteroids, constellations, comets, nebulae, galaxies, dust, etc.
Some people may associate astronomy with astrology because of the similarity in their names. However, astrology is currently not recognized as a science. Because it studies relationships between stars, constellations and planets, and human life, destiny, and various events. While this connection (between destiny and celestial bodies) has never been proved scientifically.
Observational astronomy examines space objects directly by observing them with the help of telescopes and by sending robotic probes directly to the planets of interest. Theoretical astronomy analyzes how space and its objects may evolve. For example, theoretical astronomy studies the Big Bang Theory.
Mathematics
Mathematic studies numbers, quantities, counting, measuring and shapes of objects. Math is closely related to physics. Because math is used in formulas that describe the matter’s behavior. The main branches of math studied at school are algebra (the study of mathematical symbols and the ways that those symbols are used), geometry (space, shapes, dimensions, shape sizes and relations), and calculus and analysis (differential and integral calculus, limits and related theories).
Biology
Biology is another subject that we have used for creating questions for our Easy General Knowledge Quiz. It is the field of study that examines all living organisms that inhabit our planet, including plants, animals, bacteria, mushrooms, and of course humans. The Six Kingdoms of Biology are Animalia (animals), Plantae (plants), Fungi (fungi, yeasts, mold, and mushrooms), Protista (single-cell organisms, such as algae), Archaea/Archaebacteria (single-cell organisms that have no cell nucleus), and Bacteria/Eubacteria. Biology examines the origins, distribution, growth, and evolution of all these living organisms.
There are several branches of biology including Zoology (the study of animals), Entomology (the study of insects), Anatomy (the study of the structure of living organisms, including plant anatomy, animal anatomy, human anatomy), Physiology (the study of how living organisms function), Genetics (the study of genes, the hereditary properties of living organisms), Botany (the study of plants), Evolution Biology (how living organisms evolve and develop) and Ethology (how animals adapt to their environments).
Social Studies:
Social Studies examine human society and how it functions, how human cultures develop, and how societies interact.
History
History studies all known events of the past. Especially the events connected with human affairs, states and politics, mostly using written documents. The human history is actually not that long. The oldest civilizations that appeared in Lower Mesopotamia and Egypt date back to 3000 BCE. That’s roughly just 5000 years ago. It’s close to zero compared to the age of our planet. All earlier times (before the earliest civilizations appeared) are called the prehistoric times. One of the most famous and influential civilizations was Ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus is considered to be the father of history. He lived in the 5th century BCE.
Geography
Geography examines places and environments, the properties of planet Earth, its surface, its countries, oceans, continents, etc. There are 195 countries on our planet. Geography studies the world’s division into countries, and social relationships between these countries, their borders. Geography also divides these countries into various groups. For instance, by their location, their languages, religion, ethnicities of the people inhabiting these countries. World Geography studies the physical properties of the lands of the world, and the planet’s bodies of water. Mountains, lakes, deserts, seas, oceans, prairies, cities, roads are all the subjects of geographical studies.
Political Science
Political science studies the state, its structure, power, systems of government, heads of the world’s state, political activity, ideologies, institutions, laws, wars, geopolitics, diplomacy, etc. It examines both domestic and international events. The main branches of political studies are domestic politics, international relations, domestic politics, political theory, public law, public administration, and political economy. If you can tell which president belongs to which country when taking an easy general knowledge quiz then you are dealing with political science.
Linguistics
Linguistic studies languages of the world, both widely used and dead. It’s a branch of knowledge that is somewhere between science and social studies. Linguistics examines the evolution of languages and their structure: phonetics, grammar, syntax, etc. There are actually over 6500 languages in the world. The most popular one is Mandarin Chinese, with over 1 billion speakers. English is a close second, with just a bit under 1 billion speakers. Other top 10 languages of the world include Hindustani, Spanish, Arabic, Malay, Russian, Bengali, Portuguese and French.
The Arts:
The Arts are various forms of human expression and creative activity that appeal to our senses and to our brain and evoke our emotions.
Art
Art is the production of material works by using human creative skills and imagination. Visual arts can be divided into several main branches: Painting, Drawing and Graphic Arts, Graphic Design, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Crafts, Ceramics, Photography, and Architecture. Some arts, such as graphic arts, painting, photography, and drawing are the kinds of visual arts that produce two-dimensional forms. While some other arts, like Architecture, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Crafts involve three-dimensional forms. Probably the most famous artist in history is Leonardo da Vinci. He was an Italian painter, engineer, inventor, scientist and architect from the Renaissance. He is the author of the world’s most famous painting, Mona Lisa.
Literature
Literature studies written and published works, books, stories and writing as an art form. The main branches of literature are fiction and non-fiction, and poetry and prose. Works of poetry have metrical writing, are melodic and have a rhythm. Most of these literary works employ rhyme. Works of prose don’t have a metrical structure, don’t rhyme and sound like normal spoken language.
Literary works are not only written works but those works that are created with artistic merit. Probably the most famous author and poet in the world is William Shakespeare. He used over 25 000 words in his works and also invented over 1700 new words for the English language.
Music
Music is the art of sounds. It’s the arrangement of sounds through melody, harmony, and rhythm, to produce a pleasing, beautiful form and to express emotions. What we call music is basically sounds artistically combined. There is instrumental music, when people play instruments, such as piano, violin, guitar. And there is also vocal music when people sing with their voices. Music stimulates emotions, can help with meditation, soothe, sadden, cheer up, put a baby to sleep, and so on. Silent pauses are as important to the music structure as sounds are. There are very many genres of music. The most famous genre is, of course, classical music. There is also pop music, rock music, dance music, rap, folk music, etc.
Popular Culture:
Popular culture is a set of cultural phenomena that appeal to the broad population.
Sports
Sports is a set of competitions and games that usually employ physical activities. There is a huge number of kinds of sports. Most popular worldwide are probably football or soccer, athletics, ice hockey, tennis, swimming, car racing, figure skating, volleyball, biathlon, etc. Some sports involve single contestants or pairs, and some are team competitions.
There are many types of competitions and tournaments. For example, World Championships and World Cups, championships of continents, such as European Championships, championships or certain regions or countries, Universiades (competitions for students), other cups and tournaments. The most famous global sports competition is, of course, the Olympic Games. It attracts literally billions of viewers when it’s being held every four years. Another super-popular sports tournament is the Football World Cup that also takes place once every four years.
Movies
Movies, also known as Motion Pictures or Cinema are literally moving pictures that tell certain stories. It’s a pretty new art, created at the end of the 19th century. Movies are captured by photographing scenes with a camera at a rate of about 24-30 frames per second. First movies were filmed by analog cameras onto celluloid film. Now filmmaking is becoming more and more digital. Today’s filmmakers make their movies with computer-generated effects called CGI. These effects simulate environments, scenery, characters, animals, aliens, and explosions, fire, etc. As with music and art, movies’ purpose is to stir up emotions and need to have some artistic merit. The success of a movie is measured by the awards it receives, by the critics’ and viewers’ reviews, and by its box office performance. Perhaps the world’s most famous awards in the film industry are Academy Awards or the Oscars.
Filmmaking is actually a form of art. However, general knowledge quizzes deal rather with the knowledge about the final products of filmmaking, movies, than with the technical and artistic aspects of the art of film. So this paragraph is placed under popular culture rather than the arts. Animation, pictures that appear as moving images, is a closely related art to filmmaking. Modern animation is often also computer-generated.
TV Shows
Television is a communications medium that transmits moving images and sound, such as TV shows and motion pictures, to TV sets (devices with a screen) based in people’s homes. The main purpose of television is to entertain and to educate. TV mostly broadcasts TV shows, news, motion pictures, and documentaries. Television shows are a series of content that is produced for television broadcasting. TV shows are always interrupted by advertisements (this is how TV channels make money). And some famous ad slogans have become memes.
Fashion
Fashion is the art of creating clothes and accessories, and setting and following trends in apparel, accessories, makeup, etc. Main fashion branches are Haute Couture (elaborate one-of-a-kind high fashion creations), Pret-A-Porter (ready to wear fashionable clothing sold in boutiques and at department stores), streetwear (casual clothing style), sportswear (apparel for workout, training and sports competitions), menswear, childrenswear, and many more. Fashion designers can demonstrate their creations through fashion runway shows and glossy magazines.
Food and Culinary Arts
Culinary arts are the art and the activity of cooking and serving food in a pleasing way, the knowledge of recipes and preparation techniques. Food is an absolute necessity for our living. However, humans over the centuries have managed to turn the preparation and intake of food into a form of art and highly pleasing activity. Partially thanks to the discovery of the New World and the exchange of crops and culinary recipes between the Old World and the New World. For example, Italy imported tomatoes from America several centuries ago and later Italian immigrants brought pizza to America. One notable branch of culinary arts is the Haute Cuisine. It’s the level of food preparation and presentation that originated in France and is now practiced at gourmet restaurants and luxury establishments.
Many of the aforementioned branches of knowledge (not all of them) are mentioned in our Easy General Knowledge Quiz.
